Seeking backpacking partners
for the week before Transrockies

Special request by Doug: I am coming to Leadville, Colorado to see my daughter Michelle Barton finish the Leadville 100 mile trail race on Sunday August 17th.  I want to then get at least 6 days of backpacking up in the Rockies.  Would like to hit a few 14'ers after about 3 days.  I have been doing week long backpack trips in the Sierras with my retired USA Marine Major buddy, Bob Johnson, for 25 years now.  Long ago I found it always takes me 3 days or so at altitude to get my MOUNTAIN MOJO back.  Meaning be able to power stomp up the steep switch backs with pack.  I strongly feel the need to do that before Transrockies.  Steve, however, will be coming in just two days a head of time and isn't too worried about acclimating.

Please note these backpackers we encountered at Silver Pass
claimed to be Nuns from the Order of the Perpetual Indulgences.)

If there are any other Transrockies racers thinking about how to acclimate, who have some backpacking experience AND have the extra time please contact me.  I am also interested in hearing from Colorado locals who can recommend some great scenic backpacking routes and can suggest some good Colorado Rockies backpacking books. I would think after about 3 days we could start adding in some easy morning and afternoon trail runs too.  I am into light weight packing.  Lots of Go-Lite equipment.  Got it down to 28 pounds with 7 days, 6 nights of food in my bear canister.  Have been up to the summit of California's Mount Whitney 14,496' elevation in 95, 99, 00 & 04.  Thanks.

July 24, 2008 - CANCEL THE BACKPACKING IDEA!
Found out my grand daughter Sierra is coming to Colorado with Michelle.  Decided to reserve a condo for the 3 of us in Breckenridge at 9,200' elevation for the week before Transrockies.  Will get a bunch of hikes and easy runs in.  Will be perfect for acclimating!
