Doug's August 3rd through 9th - San Francisco to Los Angeles 546.9 mile bicycling and camping adventure

Our official start was from the base of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco on Sunday afternoon.

Doug, Ron Misiunas (Doug's cousins son from Indiana) and his friend John Hudec, Bob Kubinski & Liz Harvey.

We stopped to watch  a dozen hang gliders flying along the Fort Funston cliffs (Liz, John, Ron)

View point (John, Doug, Ron)

Sunday was overcast and cold for California.  We bought some wood and had a nice fire at our Half Moon Bay campsite.

Day 2 -  Monday August 4
A 66 mile ride to Sunset Beach near Monterey. John & Doug at the Pigeon Point Lighthouse.

Toodling along as Doug calls it!

John & Ron cycling through Santa Cruz.

Pelicans flying by in Santa Cruz.

John tests the waters.

A short walk from our Sunset Beach State Park campsite over the dunes took us to the Pacific.

Hey - we survived day 2!

Ron & John trotting along the ocean

That evening - superb seafood dinner at Phil's restaurant in Moss Landing.  "The Phil" himself joined us for this photo!

Our Sunset State Beach Bike & Hike camp site.

Day 3 -Tuesday August 5 Castroville - here Liz left us to ride solo to Salinas to catch a train back to her Bay Area home.

Lunch in Carmel at the Rio Grill with Doug's friends Jerry & Sharon Hoffman and Jim & Sheila Lindgren.

Bob, John & Ron enjoy the Highway 1 scenic views from one of the many cliff pull outs.

We had a great campsite in Big Sur this night - right on a river.  A short walk to a great restaurant on the other side the river.
Day 4 - Wednesday Aug 6
Big Sur to El Morro Bay

Google Earth 3D map of part of the route from Big Sur from my Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS.

The GPS said we did 9,002' of climbs this day.
Big Sur to El Morro Flyby Tour

Double click on this link and wait for Google Earth to zoom in from orbit to the view that shows the red outline of the entire 98.7 mile ride.  Once it stabilizes, click on PLAY TOUR button or select PLAY TOUR from the drop down TOOLS menu.   That starts the animated flyover of the entire course.  Awesome!

Click HERE for more hints on setting up your Google Earth options for best viewing of Flyby Tours.  Especially will have to speed up the animation for such a long path.

Miles & miles of scenic beauty!

John is grinning because after climbing the longest hill in his life ever, he got to do the longest descent of his life!

Break's over guys.  Time to ride!

At one of our breaks, the friendly squirrels nibbled into John's pannier.

Doug, John & Ron.

Elephant seals bask in the sun just North of San Simeon.

With the docent

At El Morro State Park Campground with Dr. Mark.  He &  his wife Nancy drove from nearby Arroyo Grande.
Day 5 - Thursday August 7

Along Highway 101 in Pismo Beach

We passed several thoroughbred horse ranches along highway 135 on the way to Buellton.

Ron - proud of clocking his first one day 100 mile ride ever!  The total for the day was 111.4 miles

Our cliff top camp at El Capitan State Beach - just North of Santa Barbara & Goleta.
Day 6 - Friday August 8

Passing through Santa Barbara

Ron standing next to absolute PROOF why Californians are officially called the Granola people - Nuts, Fruits and Flakes!

Some laughs to help propel us through our longest day - 114.9 miles  (or is that art?)

Point Mugu Air Park.
Does John possess super strength OR is it Photoshop?

Biking into Malibu

An essential dip into the Malibu surf!  Our last night was in comfort in Playa Vista at friends Joan & Ravi's condo.
Day 7 -Aug 9 was 59.4 miles
546.9 cycling miles for the week, but ZERO run miles.  Time to get back training for Transrockies...
