Peters Canyon Run - Wednesday July 2, 2008

Bob Johnson & I have been running Peters once a week on Wednesday mornings after our gym workout, since last October when the Southern California forest fires destroyed Whiting Ranch.  The good news is that Whiting finally reopens on July 12th.  Means our friends Clark Foster and John Cole who live farther South will be joining us again.  Whiting was our favorite Wednesday morning trail run for at least 5 or 6 years before the fires.  We have been missing seeing deer on the trails & our post-run Butterscotch coffee & Bagels at the Limelight Cafe!  So it is adieu to Peters on a weekly basis.  Some photos from yesterday's run and Garmin GPS 3D views for Peters from 2006 here. We did enjoy post-runs at the near by "European Cafe", which was owned by our Asian friends featuring great Jewish Bagels and Irish Cream coffee flavoring!

Currently there are many forest fires raging in California.  A decent rainy season meant lots of growth that is now all dry tinder!

Cactus anyone?

Peters Canyon Flyby Tour

Double click on this link and wait for Google Earth to zoom in from orbit to the view that shows the red outline of the Figure 8 route .  Once it stabilizes, click on PLAY TOUR button or select PLAY TOUR from the drop down TOOLS menu.   That starts the animated flyover of the entire course.  Awesome!

Aliso Woods run to Top of the World, Laguna Beach - Friday July 4, 2008

Doug, who hates the heat, started at 6:30 AM and ran 7 miles from Alicia up to the Top of the World (1,000' elev.) to meet Julian Shea, Sue Rudolf & the Harveys at 8 AM.

(Think that will scare those Transrockies youngsters enough to make them leave the trail and get lost?  What a race tactic!)

Steve, Sue & Julian went up the Mathis trail back to the Top of the World, while Doug left & went back down to his car.  He got in a total of 15.1 miles and 2,523' of GPS climbs.

Hey... us senior citizens can enjoy this celebration too!

Had time to get a little running in along the beach.  On Friday, Doug cycled 51.2 miles from Oceanside to home.

The fire ruined this cactus.  Looks melted!.

Ooops! Doug's Friday July 18, 2008 training accident!

This had nothing to do with running.  5 of us are cycling from San Francisco to Los Angeles starting on Sunday August 3rd from the base of the Golden Gate Bridge.  I have cut down on my running mileage to get in some needed TOB (Time On Butt) before that 540 mile ride.  I am pretty sure the extra training for the quads pedaling up all the hills along scenic Coast Highway 1 can only make trudging up hills on Transrockies easier.  Legs and lungs already in good shape.  Butt, arms and shoulders need to re-adapt for long days on the bike.

X-Ray of Doug's 4th finger on his right hand.  Happened at  5 MPH.  Didn't even fall over.

Nothing was broken - just a dislocation.  Orthopedic specialist, Doctor Ip took all of 3 seconds to get it popped back in place.  Didn't even have to pull on my finger.  He just gently rolled his thumb on the bump sticking out and it was over.
Young guy - I told him I hate him because I have had to sign "M A L E W I C K I" a million times.  It is unfair to have a two letter last name!

Next day, I rode the Santiago Canyon Loop - the best road hills in Orange County, CA. Wore my new Garmin 305 GPS. Have been curious as to the amount of climbing.  36.2 miles and +2,201' of climbs.

On Sunday morning a friend and I biked to Huntington Beach where a  big surfing contest was in progress.  Very crowded.  Got in another 41.8 miles for a total of 102 miles for the week.

Worst thing of this whole finger incident was that I had to slit part of my biking glove so I could get my two "buddy" taped fingers inside - Boo Hoo.
