2009 Gore-Tex Transrockies
6 day Endurance Run

The drive to Colorado, altitude acclimatization in Leadville, the Transrockies Welcome Registration, plus Race Days 1 - 3

We left California on Wednesday August 19th - stayed overnight in Richfield, Utah and arrived in Leadville, Colorado on Thursday afternoon.

The California Old Goats, Steve & Doug, drove out to Colorado with fellow So Cal Trail Headz member Lambert Timmermans (LT).

We saw many interesting rock formations as we drove through Utah.

Cowboy Steve (& also president of the So Cal Trail Headz) ready to captain our Camry land yacht across California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah & Colorado.

Doug up on Ghost Rock.

LT (Lambert) was running the Leadville Trail 100 race that started on Saturday, the day before our Transrockies 6 day race started in Buena Vista, CO.

We got to sleep at this altitude for 3 nights before Transrockies.  Helpful acclimatization.

Ted Liao, Lambert Timmermans and Steve Harvey in Leadville at 3 AM.  Getting the boys ready for their 4 AM start and 100 mile trail run adventure.

Early Saturday morning August 22nd - off to downtown for the 4 AM start of Lambert's 100 miler.

LT - minutes before the 4 AM start of the LT 100!
Lambert looks like he could use a few more cups of coffee!!

I was embarrassed that 9 runners age 70 and over were entered in LT's race. I felt like a mere party person to run 113 miles in 6 days.  The LT100 results, however, showed that none of these 70+ guys finished.
Tells me something.

Steve & I drove to the Fish Hatchery aid station at mile 25 to wait for LT.

Here Steve is showing the Leadville runners the directions to Hope Pass!

Lambert arriving at the Fish Hatchery aid station.  25 miles done and 75 to go!

Next we drove to Twin Lakes.  This will be Lambert's soon to be view of starting up Hope Pass

Doug with the Vasque brand running gear rep.

Runners coming down the steep trail into the Twin Lakes aid station.

Lambert gets to do Hope Pass TWICE! LT buckled with a 29:22 total time!

Off to Buena Vista, Colorado to register for our Transrockies race.  (Our ORANGE shirt day.)

We took Lambert's drop bag to the 50 mile turn around aid station and then had to quit our crew duties for him to go register for our race in Buena Vista, CO.

Whoa - her comes daughter Michelle - a welcome sight after 3 days with Steve & LT!

Michelle with Gor-Tex's Cynthia Amon and Transrockies Race Director Aaron McConnell

Steve and Doug with the ever cheerful Luciana Cox from Brazil.  Luciana worked Transrockies as a volunteer crew member last year and decided to race in it this year.

Steve with Heather Hamilton and Chantal Hilbert (Team The Lost Girls) from Vancouver, Canada.

Michelle with Team North Face's Kami Semick & Nikki Kimball (winner of the 2004 Western States 100 mile race).

Day 1 proved Steve & I have different physiologies.  He has done 100 mile races, such as Leadville, in his youth with zero altitude acclimatization days!  I on the other hand have done enough backpacking and trail running at high elevations to know I really need 3 or more days of good workouts, not just idle loafing around at elevation before I feel acclimated and get my "Stompin' Mountain Mojo" back.  Day 1 was tough for me and Steve could have been at the finish line probably a 1/2 hour before me except for the Transrockies rule that team members have to stick within two minutes of each other.  I ended up running the final third of this 20.4 mile day with Neil Rhodes from England because his partner Wullie Brown from Scotland got serious altitude sickness including vomiting and had to drop for the day.

Transrockies Day 2 Monday August 24th.  We got shuttled to Vicksburg & had to run up and over HOPE PASS (12,583' elevation) to Twin Lakes - a run of 10.0 miles with 3,098' feet of climbs!

Doug & Steve ready to get going on Day 2.

Hanz Schmid (69) from San Francisco with Steve.

The herd getting anxious for the 8:30 AM start!

This was Our BLUE shirt day.

We had a couple of miles along a dirt road before heading up the Hope Pass trail.  Here Steve is with Kevin Stuart & Lynn Astalos of Team CԽMERE & CԽMORE.

YUP - we all started WAY, WAY down there!

Amanda Kim & Neal Oku of Team Kiddiewinkles borrowed our flag for a cool summit picture!

Michelle and dad at the Goats well marked tents in Leadville.
Custom flags, gravity defying plush goats.  Even plastic mountain goats on the top of our flag poles!

Doug & Michelle with super friend, Cindy Honebein, who is boss of all the all important massage team.  Soaking in a freezing creek first,  followed by a massage is key to enjoying day after day on the trails.

A hug for Steve whom has never been away from his wife Annie this long in all their 18 years!

Day 2 going up and over Hope Pass at 12,583' elevation was fairly easy and our shortest day.  Mostly a tediously long power walk up the 3,000' in 3 mile slope.  And we finished our Hope Pass stage in 1 minute and 8 seconds faster than last year.

Transrockies Day 3 Tuesday August 25th.  Leadville to Camp Hale.
24.3 miles & 2,930' of climbs.  (Our PURPLE shirt day.)

Today is purple shirt day!  The Goats are ready to go!  We are starting the race right down the main street in Leadville with a police escort!

Kim Kanaday and Fran Mason of Team Thing1 & Thing2 at the starting line.

Steve stops for a second to thank the school children for cheering all the runners on.

Another day of awesome scenery!

Two nights at Camp Hale gave super volunteer Memphis Joe time to make yummy Margaritas for his 200 closest friends His truck is his saloon!

Day 3 saw Team California Old Goats knock 6 minutes and 18 seconds from our last years time for this leg.  I can tell I am getting my "Mountain Mojo" back - finally!!
