Welcome to iDad Doug's "70at70"
 current humanitarian effort
Me a humanitarian?  Huh...   What happened to "Guys just want to have fun?"

Can you believe it.  I will be 70 this month on March 28, 2009.  To celebrate my 70th birthday I have planned to do a rather crazy challenge.

In short:
My 70th birthday Saturday March 28, 2009 just happens to coincide with the Old Goats 50 mile trail race in the Cleveland National Forest . I am not nuts enough at this age to try to run 50 miles of mountains in one day, but am confident I can run 70 miles in three days.  The current plan is to run 20 miles on Friday; 30 on race day; and a final 20 on Sunday to reach the 70 total. All of it will be on the Old Goats 50 mile course. This will involve 14,200 feet of climbs - 2.7 miles of vertical ups!  (Or for my Chicago friends and relatives, the same as trotting up to the top of an imaginary skyscraper that is 10 times taller than the Sears Tower, the USA's current tallest building.)

Upon hearing of it, a couple of running friends have suggested that I should use it to do some good in the world.  Great idea - why NOT?  I sent you this link because I thought you may be interested in helping out. I know that 2009 isn't exactly shaping up to be a lucrative year for most of us, but I am extending this invitation anyway.

I have several charities that I like and it is hard to pick a single one to support, so I won't. I have listed favorites and will be gratified if you pick one (or more) to support. They are all good causes. I have a lot more detail about each and the links to donate to

Lest thee doubt a 70 year old geezer should dare think of doing something like this, I attached a couple of recent pictures. (click on either photo to see full size.)

#1 - Last August, my teammate Steve Harvey, and I did the Colorado Transrockies six day endurance run. 106 miles total with 19,000 feet of climbs.  All between 8,000' and 12,538 feet elevation.   We were team California Old Goats (see: www.CaliforniaOldGoats.com ).  I was older than the guys in the next oldest team by 15 years!  We beat them and 25% of all the competing teams. Take that young people!

#2 - New Years morning - 2009.  Obviously at 69, I am too old to have an interest in partying all night.  Doing an early morning run up some gorgeous trails sounded like much more fun.  A group of our SoCal Trail Headz club started way, way down there!

Last but not least:  To help me commemorate my 70th Birthday on Saturday 28 March 2009, millions of people in a 1,000 cities around the world are joining up and will be turning out their lights for one hour at 8:30 PM to tell me to get to bed early and get plenty of rest for my final 20 miles the next morning, Sunday March 29th. Go to www.earthhour.org to sign up and to receive a reminder email.
(I hope I got your curiosity up on that one...  NOW you HAVE to click that link!)

If there is anything else you'd like to know or if there are other questions I can answer, please send me an Email DMalewicki@cox.net   And thanks for even considering this.  Of course, I would appreciate it if you also forward this link to any of your friends or coworkers that you think might be interested in helping me celebrate in this useful manner.
