Steve Harvey - age 64

Running Bio

This is a brief description of my running career

Began jungle trail running on Guam in 1970 to avoid terminal ennui, but discontinued the sport on my return to Laguna Beach, California... too many distractions.  I returned to running in June of 1981 and entered the Heart of San Diego Marathon the following October.  I finished in 3:17:56.  I broke three hours at the LA lite Marathon in the spring of 1982 and ran several sub three marathons before I was invited to join a seasoned (read old) running acquaintance for a 'long' trail training run.  His only advice was to bring water.  At the time, my long runs were between eighteen and twenty miles.  We departed the trail head at 5:00AM and after about nine miles of uphill running,  I asked how long 'long' was.  Walt Johnson smiled at me and drawled forty-two.

We finished the 'long' run and I was hooked.  I began entering fifty and hundred mile trail races.  I met my wife at Western States in 1991 (she was crewing for a mutual friend).  I proposed to her while running the WS 100 the following year...  Can't let a crew like that get away! .  She began trail running in 1993 and now regularly beats me in trail marathons and 50K's.

I have finished the following 100's  Wasatch Front, Leadville, Vermont (2), Western States, Old Dominion, and Angeles Crest (4).   I still run one street marathon year, the Long Beach Marathon (24) to remind me I don't like asphalt.

Most recently, Annie and I produced the Old Goats Fifty Mile Mountain Race.  I think it's easier to run a 50 than to put one on.

I have run one 5K...   never again!
